Now that you have picked out your puppy, you’ll want to be prepared before bringing your new Yorkie puppy home to help make the transition easier. You may have to change a few things in your daily routine to accommodate the new puppy. Yorkie puppies thrive on human attention and should not be left alone all day. If you are not able to be home during the day, try to come home for lunch or have a trusted friend or neighbor drop by to visit with your puppy. You’ll need to set up a quiet, comfortable sleeping area, or den, where your puppy can go to be alone.

You will need to create a safe environment for your new puppy by eliminating potential hazards inside and outside of your home. Below are a few examples of how to “puppy proof” your home.

Remove breakable items in areas that your puppy has access to.

Make sure all electrical cords are hidden, covered, or out of reach; outlets should be covered with plastic outlet plugs.

Safely store Medications and household chemicals out of reach.

Some house and garden plants are poisonous to dogs and should be removed.  Some examples are: Tulips, Poinsettias, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Holly, Tobacco, Daffodils, Iris, Mistletoe, Japanese Yew, Oleander, and English Ivy. Check with your Veterinarian if you are not sure about a specific plant.
Please check the TOXIC page for a bigger list of toxic items.
Be sure all chemicals are safely stored, especially Antifreeze.

Yorkie puppies are a lot like infants and will get into things if given the opportunity, so “puppy proof” your home the same way you would “baby proof” it.

The best time to bring home a new puppy is when the house is quiet. When you first arrive home with your puppy, let him begin adjusting to his new environment by allowing him to explore his new surroundings. Like a baby, a Yorkie puppy needs rest and should not be disturbed. Putting a piece of clothing in with your puppy while he sleeps will help him get used to your scent. Make sure you offer him food and water because he will probably be hungry and thirsty after the journey to his new home.  An important part of your preparations will be to find a Veterinarian that you are comfortable with. You will need a Veterinarian for routine check ups, vaccinations, and preferably one that offers after hours’ emergency services, if needed.
